Labor & Delivery
Lovelace Women’s Hospital
I was in seventh grade when I decided I wanted to be a labor and delivery nurse. I had a cousin who was a nurse, and I really looked up to her. I’ve always been fascinated with babies, so it seemed like the perfect career for me.
During nursing school, I did my rotations at Lovelace Medical Center. Right away, I was struck by the warm, family-like atmosphere. People were so friendly and helpful; they seemed to really want to be here. That was 22 years ago and I’m still here!
A lot has changed since I started out, and I really appreciate the fact that I’ve been allowed to grow along with the system. Lovelace has been very flexible, supporting me in taking on more responsibility when I was ready and allowing me to scale back when I wanted to spend more time with my family.
This is a really open environment. It’s a good feeling to know that I can go to anyone in administration with an issue or concern. They want to hear from nurses – how we are doing, what we need, what ideas we have. In fact, it’s not uncommon to see our leadership team up on the unit. They come by just to chat and see how we are doing. Sometimes they even hand out ice cream or some other small token of appreciation. It’s great to know our hard work is noticed.
While things are certainly different today than they were 22 years ago, the warmth and compassion I first noticed is still there. I can’t imagine working anywhere else.
