Growing up, my mother suffered from congestive heart failure, so I saw firsthand the difference a good nurse could make. I knew at a very young age this is what I wanted to do with my life.
Today, I’ve been in nursing for 28 years. My career has taken me to hospitals in India, Saudi Arabia and the United States. While each experience was different, nursing is essentially the same in every language. It’s always about the patient first and foremost.
When I came to the United States in 1993, I took a job at Lovelace Medical Center, and I’ve been here ever since. I’ve seen a lot of changes over the years, but deciding to stay is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
My co-workers are like family to me; we’re all here for one other, and no one hesitates to jump in to help when someone is busy or having a bad day. It’s a good feeling to know that if I call our unit director at 2 a.m. with a problem, she’ll do whatever it takes to help me solve it. Having that kind of trust and communication makes all the difference.
After all of these years, I still love nursing. I’m very lucky to be able to look back at the end of the day and know I’ve helped someone.
